Time To Reflect
Members of the Elite team recently attended the relaunch of the Circular Glasgow Network at Ikea Braehead. Throughout the evening we were speaking to various people and the same question kept coming up. "How is your circular journey coming on?" Becoming a circular company is a challenge, if you have dealt with us before you will know we are honest people and are the first to admit it is taking longer than we had hoped to achieve our goal and were open to admit this throughout the event.
Afterwards I felt a bit despondent, as a manufacturer and contract furniture supplier it is our responsibility to ensure we are playing our part for the environment. The message from COP25 this year is that time for action is now, the next day I went back to the office and was speaking to some members of production and was reminded that yes we may not be where we planned to be at this point but what we have achieved today should still be celebrated. This year alone we have;
Struck a deal with our raw materials supplier to send back virgin scrap material to be turned back into fillings diverting them from landfill.
Launched a range of sustainable products on our website, given our customers a better choice when it comes to purchasing.
Installed 2 energy efficient gas boilers in our premises.
Improved our delivery scheduling and communication to clients to ensure that clients in the same area would get delivery at the same time. (It is lovely to see how many clients are happy to wait an extra 1 or 2 weeks for their goods knowing that they are saving a van from having to travel to the same area twice).
I have learnt a few things this week, first a small step in the right direction is better than no step at all, secondly don’t beat yourself up when things don’t go to plan, projects can go of course or worse grind to a halt through demoralisation alone and finally it’s a good idea to keep a note of the things you are doing well as you can tend to forget what you have done as time goes on.
I encourage everyone to have a look at the Circular Glasgow website, it is full of useful resources and up to date news about what is happening in the Circular Economy in Glasgow, Scotland and around the UK.
