Located on in the rural location of Ullapool, Harbour House b&b is a wonderful retreat for holiday makers and explorers alike. Set along the well-established driving route of the NC 500, it is popular with travelers looking for a haven for the night as they explore the highlands. Harbour House has a central building where they host their B&B guests, with loch side Lodges, offering a self-catering option with small kitchen and lounge space, for guests looking for a more private retreat.
Harbour House got in touch regarding their project. With our expertise in contract specific furniture, we were a good fit for this project given our extensive fabric library and experience creating unique spaces. The aim for this project was to create a comfortable space for guests, marrying well to the main attraction of the area, the wonderful views. All this while remaining practical for travelers with muddy boots and messy luggage.
Located in a rural area, largely occupied by hill walkers, holiday goers and those with a love for the outdoors, the main apparent competitor for Harbour House are mid-ranges hostels and b&bs with an “outdoorsy” appeal.
Harbour House was looking to balance the functionality needed for busy travelers with a more elevated style, helping guests enjoy the landscape from a more polished setting. This in turn would help Harbour House stand out from the crowd as a serene alternative to similar accommodation in the area.
One of the main criteria highlighted at the initial meetings with the client were the longevity of items. Their busy books means that rooms are often fully booked, facing quick turnarounds and heavy use. This made it essential that all pieces be made to withstand knocks and bumps, made using the highest quality contract materials.
Secondary to function was aesthetic. Based in Ullapool the dramatic landscape is a large draw for many guests. Echoing the colour palette of the scenery was a driver for the client, pulling the hilly mountain scape from outside, in.
For the b&b, this was achieved by introducing warm colors of neutral browns, creams, grays and mustards. Combining velvets with earthy tweed effect materials and tartan patterns made a rich combination of finishings that add a luxurious feeling to the space, while shadowing the tones of the landscape.
After we had completed the B&B, the client decided to return to us for their Lochside Lodges. This time working with an interior design scheme they had developed, we were responsible for bringing their vision to life, sourcing and supplying the items required to create the tranquil scheme desired.
Once again working with contract specific materials, the lodges used a more tranquil pallet with muted taupe upholstery, cool blues and greens brought in to echo the scenic waterscape view. Textural finished in the driftwood lamp and raw edge coffee table helped to add depth to the scheme, enhancing the overall style of the space.
We love the design work completed for Harbour House and are pleased to say they continue to return for the supply of alternative items to this day.

They provided regular updates on the progress of our project and addressed any questions or concerns we had promptly. Their commitment to delivering our project on time and within budget was truly impressive.
Moreover, the installation process carried out by Elite was seamless. Their skilled team of installers ensured that each piece of furniture was expertly placed and assembled, leaving no room for errors.”
Kirsti, the lead product specialist working on the project with Elite added:
“The setting or Harbour House is so spectacular, it was a pleasure to work in bringing this scenery into the b&b setting. The combination of the luxurious velvets and warm colours in the b&b make it a real cosy retreat to rest your head after a day of exploring. The Lodges are just the opposite, a much lighter and more airy space to take in the water. We are very happy with both our design work and ability to bring the client’s brief to fruition. ”
